The best grep and ripgrep alternatives for AI coding agents in 2026

SHORT ANSWER · UPDATED 2026-10-19

What is the best grep or ripgrep alternative for an AI coding agent in 2026? For one-off literal searches, none: ripgrep is still the default. ugrep adds Boolean and fuzzy queries, ast-grep and Semgrep match syntax, zoekt ranks over a trigram index, and XERJ returns ranked passages through MCP.

Key number: ripgrep has 69,257 GitHub stars and its latest release is 15.2.0 (2026-07-15), the most-starred tool on this list. (as of 2026-10-19 · source: github.com/BurntSushi/ripgrep)

Last checked: 2026-10-19. Every third-party fact on this page was re-read from the tool's own docs or repository on that date.

TL;DR — For a one-off literal search, ripgrep is still the right tool, and nothing here replaces it. The alternatives win different jobs: ugrep for Boolean and fuzzy queries, ast-grep and Semgrep for syntax patterns, zoekt for a ranked index over many repositories, XERJ for ranked passages behind an MCP server.

PASTE THIS TO YOUR AI AGENT — IT DOES THE REST Act as a coding agent. Read https://xerj.org/llms.txt, then choose a search tool for this repository from the table on this page: keep ripgrep for one-off literal searches, ast-grep or Semgrep for syntax patterns, zoekt for a ranked trigram index over many repositories, XERJ for ranked passages over code plus docs and data files through MCP. Report which one you chose and why.

ripgrep: still the default

ripgrep searches files directly, so there is no index to build or keep fresh. For an agent, that means a fresh answer on every call. Choose ripgrep when the agent searches a tree once or twice; use grep when nothing else is installed, because it ships with almost every system.

It beats XERJ on real tasks. On one 331-file tree the two tools named the same files on 18 of 30 disclosed tasks, and ripgrep 14.1.1 won 5 outright, including a substring inside an identifier that the index missed (XERJ vs ripgrep).

ugrep: grep with Boolean and fuzzy queries

ugrep accepts Google-like Boolean patterns, fuzzy matches, and searches inside zip, tar and compressed files, and PDF and Office documents. Its optional indexer speeds up slow or cold file systems.

It still prints every match in file order, so a common term still floods the agent's context.

ast-grep and Semgrep: syntax, not text

ast-grep parses code with tree-sitter and matches patterns such as "every unwrap() inside a loop", and can rewrite each match. Semgrep matches rule patterns aimed at security and correctness, and ships an MCP server that coding assistants can call directly.

Both answer questions that no text search answers well. Choose ast-grep when the agent must find or rewrite a syntax shape; choose Semgrep when the shape is a security rule. Use them beside a search tool, not instead of one. XERJ vs ast-grep splits those jobs.

zoekt: a ranked trigram index

zoekt builds a trigram index and ranks matches, with ctags symbol information as a key ranking signal. Its README describes it as fast search across many repositories in a large codebase, with an index server and web server for larger-scale use.

It has no MCP server and no GitHub release; you install it with go install. It indexes code, not the docs and data files around it.

The Silver Searcher: superseded

ag was the fast grep before ripgrep. Its last push was on 2024-06-16 and it has no GitHub release. It still works, but nothing on this page needs it.

XERJ: ranked passages behind MCP

XERJ indexes a repository plus the docs, logs, JSONL and CSV files around it, and xerj mcp returns ranked passages with file:line. In one psf/requests capture an answer was 1,303 bytes where rg printed 25,150 (the capture).

What it gives up: an index to build and keep fresh, no syntax rewriting, single-node only, and the 5 tasks ripgrep won above.

How this page was checked

Every licence, install line and capability above was read from the project's own README on 2026-10-19. Stars, latest releases and last-push dates came from the GitHub REST API the same day. No new benchmark was run for this page; the two XERJ numbers link to their published captures.

FAQ

Is there a ripgrep alternative that ranks results?

ripgrep, ugrep and ag print every match in file order; none of them ranks. zoekt ranks matches over a trigram index and uses ctags symbols as a ranking signal. XERJ ranks passages with BM25 over an index and returns file:line for each hit.

Should a coding agent stop using ripgrep?

No. On one 331-file tree ripgrep won 5 of 30 disclosed tasks outright against the XERJ index, including a substring inside an identifier. Keep ripgrep for one-off literal searches and add an index when the agent asks the same tree many questions.

Which tool finds syntax patterns instead of text?

ast-grep matches tree-sitter patterns and rewrites code; Semgrep matches rule patterns for security and correctness and runs as an MCP server. Neither builds a search index, so neither goes stale.

Which of these work as an MCP server?

Semgrep (semgrep mcp), ast-grep through the separate ast-grep MCP project, and XERJ (xerj mcp). ripgrep, ugrep, zoekt and ag are command-line tools an agent calls through its shell.

Is The Silver Searcher still maintained?

Its last push on GitHub was on 2024-06-16 and it has no GitHub release, as read from the GitHub API on 2026-10-19. ripgrep and ugrep cover the same job and ship regular releases.

Were these tools benchmarked against each other?

No head-to-head benchmark was run for this page. The ripgrep numbers come from the published 30-task comparison and the 1,303-byte answer from the psf/requests capture, both linked on this page.
